Take Long Showers

The more your art improves, the less time you’ll have to be creative.

As your art grows and expands and reaches new eyes, you’ll find yourself managing simultaneous creative projects, meeting with pastors or department heads, following up on past-due projects, and staying up all night to meet hard deadlines. You’ll be forced to learn how to provide your own tech support for the hardware and software you use.

And if you don’t cheat something, you’ll unintentionally cheat what got you there in the first place.

Creativity.

You’ll cheat creativity.

There are two avenues God uses to infuse creativity into our lives. He uses the spontaneous moments, and He uses the planned moments.

Many of the artists I meet speak of creativity as something that’s either there or not – that it’s ALL spontaneous. They speak of creativity as something mysterious, rolling into their minds against their will, then leaving just as quickly. That’s spontaneous creativity, and it plays a role in what I do every day.

But for me, planned creativity trumps spontaneous creativity every time.

I have two planned moments where creativity can happen every day. My job is to place myself in both of these environments. God’s job is to speak creativity into my imagination, if He chooses. My role is to take both of these environments seriously. His role is lead the meeting once I’m there.

I TAKE LONG SHOWERS – Many artists and creatives can connect with this environment. Studies have actually been done that indicate how the hot water running down the back of our heads and neck stimulate the creative parts of our brains. Don’t ask me for a reference here, but I’m quite certain I heard that on cable somewhere. My point is this – I take long showers. And I listen to the barrage of ideas that fill my creative spirit. Most of these ideas will never see the light of day. But a few are amazing, and mine to own.

I SPEND ONE HOUR EVERY MORNING AT STARBUCKS – During this season of my life, I drop my youngest off at the local high school, and I pick one of three coffeehouses. I force myself to stay there until 9:00am. I blog, I plan, I write scripts, I read His word, I journal my prayers. During this time, God always speaks some creative concept or notion into my heart.

My point for you is simple. I beg you to find your own creative environment, and PLAN to sit there for a certain time limit. You’ll need to cheat something for this to happen.

Don’t cheat your family.

Don’t cheat your deadlines.

You may need to cheat your sleep, or your day job, or your church involvement, or your standard of living.

But please, please, please…

Don’t cheat creativity.

I need to cheat the late-night Netflix movie in the "background." It either distracts my productivity or otherwise robs me of sleep.

Yes – I love getting specific about what we need to cheat. Well done. GM.

Thanks for the nudge Gary. I like the one hour block concept

Jack – It's a great concept, but so difficult to enact. Floodgate is in its busiest season ever (in 6 years) right now, and I've let that hour go a few times. Hate when I do that. Thanks for posting! Blessings. GM.

This is what I'm experiencing right now…art improves and suddenly every department wants something. I actually said to someone the other day "these time aren't fun because I don't get to be creative, I just have to produce". It made me sad. Thanks for your words and for speaking directly to me today. I'm off to cheat something!

    • Gary Molander

Jason – That's such a great distinction you're making – between being creative and producing. My prayer is always that I get to do both – that my creativity leads to something beautiful being produced. That being said, I understand the sadness associated with the reality of your comment. Praying for you, bro. GM.

So I'm not the only one who enjoys taking long showers for the ideas they generate! Good to know.

    • Gary Molander

I think it's far more common than I ever knew. And they're great in the winter!

The idea of just being able to go to Starbucks an work creatively for an hour sounds amazing! I'll be going back to college next week and I'm not even sure where I'm going to find time to be creative. During this Christmas break, I've been able to learn from others and just have time to be creative and actually execute the ideas I have. Going back to school, it looks like I'm going to have to cheat distractions!

Yep – School is another topic entirely. I should also be clear about the Starbucks thing – Because I choose to do that, I end up going back to work at night at least 2 nights a week. I'm forced to regularly work through lunches, and also work many Saturday mornings. It's something that costs me dearly, but it's so very worth it in the end. Good luck in school! Praying that you cheat somewhere. GM.

Admission: I often sit down in the shower as much (or more) than standing up.

I honestly never knew why I did this until I read this post. All I knew is that if felt soothing and I liked being rained on in my own home.

      Me too.

      And me too.

      Thanks for posting! GM.

I'm gonna try going to a coffee shop after I drop of the kids. Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff Gary. I find myself desperately needing a fresh environment to stir my creativity, especially when I'm in a funk. Planning space for creativity is such a necessity. Now if I can only waterproof my iphone!

Couldn't agree more. Showers and coffee shops have been huge for me. I've yet to figure out what it is about a coffee shop that makes me get more stuff done well than in my office. I've also found driving without any music in the car (and alone) to be a creativity booster. The challenge there is remembering whatever it is until you can get to a point of recording it.

Chris – I agree with you – I have no idea where the sanctity of the coffee shop lies, but I'm okay with that. And the no-music-in-the-car-thing? That's a sure deal for me too. Thanks for posting. Blessings on you and your ministry! GM.

A lot of my greatest ideas have come during a long shower. I didn’t realize that the warm water actually helped that process. I might have to take longer showers more often!

Great post Gary! I too have had some great ideas pop into my noggin whilst in the shower. I've heard multiple people refer to certains songs they've written or works of art they've created as buried cities. As if they already existed… you just have to dig them up. The shower has proved to be quite the efficient tool to gently remove the dirt that surrounds any artistic archeological dig.

As for coffee shops… I have a love hate relationship with them. As a music guy, I perceive the world mainly through my ears. Amidst the cacophony of conversations, the hits of the 80's, 90's and today (and even classical music), and the whacking and wheezing sounds caused by espresso machines and their operators, I have a heck of a time focusing sometimes. I have many friends who can tune all of it out without a problem, but sometimes I find the environment debilitating. For me, the coffee shop is a place to step out of my home environment (which is also my work place), to prepare my mind to enter the creative process when I get back home. Don't get me wrong though… I LOVE coffee and I love coffee shops!

Hey mate! Awesome post. As a fellow long-shower-ideas-man I certainly resonate. As a creative leader, church online pastor and worship pastor at a large church in New Jersey … I know what I need to do – cheat the church!
